Andy and I just returned from our honeymoon to North Carolina. We had originally planned on traveling abroad for the honeymoon but after our destination wedding in Mexico, realized that a big Europe trip might exhaust us even further! After doing some research, it looked like North Carolina might be able to offer us some of the relaxation and serenity we were looking for. North Carolina is so southern and quaint but has the absolute best summer weather compared to what we’re use to in Oklahoma (we’re talking 60’s and 70’s), especially where we stayed in the mountains. We chose to stay at a bed and breakfast type hotel for the first time ever and we were so glad we did! We enjoyed farm-to-table gourmet homemade breakfasts and the best views anyone could ask for.
We stayed at a bed and breakfast a little off the beaten path, Fire Mountain, which was about an 8-10 minute drive outside main street in Highlands. From the moment we arrived on the property we were greeted by incredible views and the warmest staff. We received a personal greeting from the Inn owners, Hiram and Matthew, who also shared some restaurant recommendations and day-trip ideas.
Andy and I stayed in the “Laurel” tree house which was equipped with a private walk-way and hammock on the deck (which we took full advantage of). The room itself was minimal and clean. The entire tree house was surrounded by trees and lush greenery.
The property was quiet and private; we saw maybe a handful of guests our entire visit. We started each day with an incredible view from the deck and one of the best homemade breakfasts I have ever had when traveling! Matthew even made us a picnic for one day which included a veggie sandwich with vegetables from the property garden and a BLT.
I highly recommend this property if you are ever in the area! It was such a pleasant experience from start to finish. We even came home to a thank you card that Matthew and Hiram had sent. Have you ever been to Highlands, NC? Comment below with your favorite place to stay!
